Making the Most of a London Spring Evening
A May evening in London, when the weather plays along, is about as good as the city gets. Warm enough to be out without a coat, light until late, and everyone in a good mood. Here’s how to use it.
Chase the light
The evenings are long now, so make the most of them. Finish up, get outside, and there’s still plenty of daylight to enjoy.
Terrace weather
Beer gardens and rooftops are back in full swing. On a good May evening, an outdoor table is the only place to be. For a similar vibe on another night, check out how the city shakes off winter.
Keep it simple
You don’t need a big plan for a spring evening in London. A drink outside, a walk by the river, good company. Sometimes that’s the whole night, and it’s plenty.
Where to catch a proper May sunset
Primrose Hill remains one of the better spots in the city for this, with an open view across the skyline that catches the last of the light beautifully, and it’s an easy walk up from Camden or Regent’s Park if you want to build a longer evening around it. Alexandra Palace offers something similar from north London, on a bigger scale, while Waterloo Bridge gives a more central option for anyone who doesn’t want to leave the centre of town, with the Thames and the City skyline lit up as the sun goes down behind it.
Timing matters more than people think. Arriving twenty minutes before the sun actually sets, rather than right at the moment, means you catch the golden hour beforehand as well as the main event, and it avoids the slight scramble of racing to a viewpoint at the last minute only to find the best spots already taken by people who planned a bit further ahead.
The garden pub as a genre
May is arguably peak season for London’s garden pubs, that specific category of pub built as much around its outdoor space as its interior. The Southbank and Hackney both have strong examples, often converted from old industrial sites into something with string lights, picnic benches and a relaxed, slightly scruffy charm that suits a warm evening far better than a polished rooftop bar. These rarely take bookings, so arriving straight after work on a warm day, rather than waiting until the evening proper, is usually the way to guarantee a table.
Whatever you end up doing, May tends to reward the loosest plans best of all. Keep the evening open, let the weather decide the details, and some of the best nights of the whole year in London happen exactly this way, with nothing booked and nowhere fixed to be.
